How to Keep a Child Engaged During Homework
4 June 20266 min read
Children are rarely simply “lazy” when it comes to schoolwork. More often, they do not understand the task, are tired, or are afraid of making a mistake. Engagement begins with a small and achievable step.
How to Start a Study Session
- Remove unnecessary items from the desk and agree on one short goal.
- Start with a task the child can complete in about 10 minutes.
- Ask, “How would you start?” instead of immediately correcting their answer.
- Praise the child's effort, for example: “You stopped and tried again,” rather than focusing only on the final result or grade.
When Attention Wanders
Pause, move around, or take a one-minute break, then return to the task. Do not extend the study session as a punishment. A tired brain has difficulty learning. If the same topic causes difficulties every week, give the parents specific examples so they can discuss the issue with the school if necessary.
The tutor's role is to help the child maintain interest and complete assignments independently, not to do the homework for them.
