10 Important Questions to Ask a Nanny During the First Interview
20 February 20267 min read
The first interview should help you understand how a person works, not simply how likeable they are. Prepare your questions in advance and make time for the nanny's questions as well.
Ten Questions
- What age groups of children have you worked with the most?
- Tell me about a situation when a child did not want to eat or sleep.
- How would you respond if a child fell or hit their head?
- Do you have first-aid knowledge, and when did you last refresh it?
- How do you talk to a parent about difficult topics?
- What do you do if your opinion differs from the family's rules?
- Can you work with a sick child, and in what situations would you not be able to?
- How do you organize outdoor activities and screen time?
- Who can provide a reference from your most recent job?
- What are your expectations regarding pay, possible delays, and vacation time?
What to Look for in the Answers
A good answer is specific: it includes an example, clear boundaries, and a calm tone. Be cautious with candidates who answer every question only with “whatever the parent says” without explaining their own judgment. After the interview, compare your notes and only then arrange a trial day.
