The Parent-Nanny Relationship: Professional Ethics and Boundaries

22 March 20266 min read

A good working relationship can be warm and trusting, but it is also a professional relationship. Ethics begin with the issues everyone discusses clearly before the first paid working day.

What Should Be Agreed on in Writing

  • Working hours and what is considered overtime.
  • Payment date, payment method, and how potential delays are handled.
  • Household rules regarding food, screen time, guests, and posting photos on social media.
  • Who to call in an emergency and when it is appropriate to leave the home.

Respect Should Go Both Ways

Parents should not ask the nanny for unpaid extra hours every week by saying “just this once.” The nanny should also not discuss the family's private life with others or change agreed childcare and parenting rules without asking first.

If tension arises, talk about the specific situation rather than someone's personality. Short and calm feedback helps maintain boundaries and continue the work without allowing frustrations to build up.
